Mind over Body

Day before yesterday I, officially, started my preparation for the Mumbai Marathon 2011. I intend to post my progress on this blog tagging each post with Mumbai Marathon 2011. Before I venture out to say more, let me give you an update on the status of my preparation.

September 7, 2010

Distance run: 8.5 kms.
Place:  KBR Park

September 8, 2010

Distance run: 5.2 kms
Place: KBR Park

I intend to put a daily update (assuming I will be preparing daily with necessary rest days).

Why Mumbai Marathon?

I am running the Mumbai Marathon for two reasons.

a. To do something that will test my endurance.
b. More importantly, I am running to raise funds for Rang De - a cause that is close to my heart. I will be posting details on how you can support my run by donating to Rang De.

Now coming to the title of this post - Mind over Body. When I started my run, I was reminded of this quote by "General George S Patton

"If you are going to win any battle, you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do... the body is never tired if the mind is not tired."

And I actually saw this in play on my first day. There is steep flight of stairs in KBR park (which I am sure anyone who has walked around the KBR Park outer ring even once will know) which I encountered just 2 kms into my running and I told myself, I am not going to walk on these; I will run. By the time I was through the stairs, I thought I just stop running. That is when I thought, let me check my endurance. I kept on running and actually ran 5 more kms. A classic example of mind winning over the body.

  1. You can use something like http://www.runningahead.com/ to log your runs. They also have a widget that you can put on your blog and it shows your last few runs.
